The Glorious (Antwerp, BE)

IMG_0961In Aug15 I managed to find time during the holidays to visit the restaurant of chef Johan Van Raes (and when in Antwerp, do take some time to chill at the Zuid district).

At the time I had no clue what to expect, though heard some very good comments from friends, so let’s try… In the end I’ve been back twice in the year after, so should already say enough about how I liked it:)

I was seated in the ground floor section with beautiful wood panelling (do try to get a seat there) and view on the bar (and do try one of the cocktails before or after). Service was more than good, a bit more formal than others, but very correct, helpful and knowledgeable. It’s like they’re a bit more on the background, but bon, definitely not a bad word, au contraire.

The food was great, period. Fantastic foie gras dish, one with sweetbread (had this recurring in the next two visits) and then the chocolate dessert to end, what a beauty!! The plating was well thought through and a pleasure to look at, almost a pity to eat (joking… well…:)).

Dishes that will stick with me:

  • Foie gras with marinated pear gel and coulis
  • Sweetbread with artichoke and carrots
  • “The Glamour” chocolate dessert

From the 1 star Michelin restaurants I’ve tried in Antwerp and in general, this one is part of the top to me. Great experience(s)… if it not long after makes you wonder when you can go back, that’s always a good sign in my book:)
