Ophelia (Konstanz, GER)

201608 - Ophelia - 050

It’s been already 3 weeks, but with the hectic weeks at my study, it took a while to get a proper note down of my visit to Konstanz during the Seesucht Festival. I actually didn’t know this was actually going on and intended to go shopping for an outfit and then close the evening with a dinner at 2 star Ophelia by chef Dirk Hoberg in the beautiful RIVA hotel. As it was an impromptu visit, I called the day itself and thankfully someone cancelled as they were fully booked for a special Seesucht dinner. So… off for a 1 hour drive to Konstanz!

The city center was relatively packed, but no place to leave the car, so straight on to the hotel and its terrace with a view on the lake. An apero later it was time to go get pampered:) The aperitif was served on the restaurant terrace which was a very nice touch and also get me in contact with a lovely elderly local couple (the husband was 92… and still gourmand: respect!) Afterwards we were guided to our respective table for the continuation.

The amuse-bouche was a refreshing start for a summery day as it was. The presentation -as with the other dishes- was top: not exagerated, colorful and a nice play with textures. The foie d’oie dish with coconut was a big surprise, but definitely worth it, however, for me somehow the biggest star/surprise was the fruit dessert. Visually pleasing, but it was a delight how the chef played with ‘simply’ the berries. Yes there was a nice cassis sorbet and a big dot sweetness, but it mainly a combination of pure berries placed and balanced perfectly to definitely ask for a second portion… Add to this that the service was as I would expect it and it would not be a surprise that I left a happy experience richer:)

Dishes that will stay with me:

  • Foie d’oie with water melon and coconut
  • Berries dessert with cassis sorbet
  • Gourmandises being small cocktails in different edible forms (puts a smile on your face:)

After the dinner we were invited to the rooftop pool area where we had a great view on the fireworks capping off the Seesucht festival as well as our evening of fine dining.
